HOTEL BRAND OVERVIEW
Hyatt Regency hotels are popular among business travelers as they often host conferences and meetings due to their large size. However, they also frequently attract families as they tend to include a full set of amenities and supply of suites.
This hotel was full of guests attending events. It’s a popular wedding venue, given the beautiful Manhattan skyline view. As a result, suite availability on weekends can be difficult to come by during wedding season.
BOOKING
This is a Hyatt category 4 (out of 8), meaning a stay here requires 15,000 Hyatt points per night at the standard rate. Cash rates are typically around $250 to $400 per night.
I opted to book a standard King room with a Hyatt Free Night Award. As a result, I could not apply a Suite Upgrade Award (awards cannot be combined). Category 1-4 Free Night Awards cannot be redeemed in Manhattan, as all hotels are category 5 or greater.
LOCATION
This Hyatt Regency is located in Jersey City, New Jersey.
If you’re looking to visit Manhattan, the fastest option is to hop on the PATH train. The Exchange Place station is located nearly right next door to the hotel. From there, you’ll be one stop away (5 minutes) from World Trade Center. If you’re looking to go to Times Square, you can then take the NYC Subway directly north on the 2/3 train (10 minutes).
The immediate area around the hotel is not the best for foodies, relative to Manhattan. But if you don’t want to go into the city, you can find a few quick bites, coffee shops, and sit-down options within a 10 minute walking radius.
CHECK IN
I arrived at the hotel around noon, before the official check-in time of 4:00pm. They were able to check me into a King Bed City View right away. Unfortunately there was no suite availability, which I had expected after checking the Hyatt app that morning.
The lobby is full of natural light, with views of the Hudson River and Manhattan. The onsite restaurant and bar are located on the same floor.
ROOM
Immediately upon entering the room, my favorite part was the view. There were nearly floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline. You could even open the window slightly. Two seats and a small table are situated in front of the windows, so you can enjoy the view with a cup of coffee or glass of wine.
The size of the room was above the average of what you’d find in Manhattan, at about 400-450 square feet.
The bathroom had a shower/bathtub. As is the case in Hyatt Regency hotels, the brand of shampoo, soap, etc. they offer is Pharmacopia.
There was a desk with two bottles of complimentary water on it, as well as a mini fridge that you can use to chill drinks or food. A safe was located above the fridge.
There was no robe or slippers in the closet, but they did have one luggage rack and an iron.
You can see signs of aging in the room, but nothing that bothered me. The only annoying aspect was the very small size of the TV, which you can’t really see when sitting in bed. It did have Chromecast, though.
AMENITIES
The restaurant onsite is Vu, which offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. It offers food such as burgers, pastas, and salads.
The hotel has both a gym and pool with beautiful views of the Hudson River. The gym is small, but open 24/7.
There is a ballroom on the top floor, which is used by the weddings frequently happening here.
SERVICE
Given that my stay was only one night, my interaction with staff was limited. My experience with the Front Desk was positive, as they immediately recognized my Globalist status upon my early check-in and worked to find me an available, superior room.
NEARBY ACTIVITIES
NYC has an endless list of activities, most of which are easily accessible via the subway system.
The closest point of Manhattan to Jersey City is the west side of Lower Manhattan. There, you can spend a few hours at the 9/11 Museum, shop at the Oculus, or hop on a ferry to the Statue of Liberty.
SUMMARY
Hyatt Regency Jersey City is a great option during a trip to NYC if you’re looking to do any of the following: save on cash or points, redeem a Hyatt Free Night Award, stay in a more spacious room (relative to Manhattan), drive a car to the hotel and park, or enjoy a room with a view. There is also a Hyatt House almost right next door. I prefer the Regency for its Globalist benefits and views, but the House can be preferable for people without status looking for complimentary breakfast or a kitchenette.
